A rare 19th-century volcanic lava medallion, cast in Naples in 1867 to mark the bicentenary of Francesco de Marchi (1610–1667), Bishop of Krk. Formed from real Vesuvian lava, with his portrait in profile and name and date to the reverse. A fine example of the Grand Tour’s devotional art — faith shaped in fire.
