Antique Dutch Seascape Oil Painting with Fishing Boats, Circa 1800
£395.00
This late 18th-century or early 19th century Dutch seascape captures the raw power of the ocean during a storm. Though unsigned, we would say that it is very much in the style of Ludolf Backhuysen (1630-1708).
The painting is overall well-preserved, with vibrant colors and sharp brushstrokes. While the canvas has been relined, this hasn’t affected its condition. The stormy waves and dramatic skies are rendered in remarkable detail, with light breaking through the clouds adding depth to the scene.
Measuring 41cm by 30.5cm, this piece would make a standout addition to any collection of Dutch seascapes. The current frame is modern and could be updated to better suit its 18th-century style.
